Who was Janus?

God of gates, protector of Rome
Janus was the Roman god of gates and doors, and this association with security is one reason we chose the name for our company. Janus is also the god of beginnings and endings, hence the month of January is named after him. His distinctive head with two faces represents the transition between primitive life and civilization, backward- and forward-looking.
As the first king of Latium, Janus ushered in a Golden Age of peace and welfare, of laws and money, and of agriculture. After his death he was deified and became the protector of Rome.
When Romolus and his associates stole the Sabine Virgins, the Sabines attacked the city. Janus made a hot spring erupt from the ground that drove the attackers from the city. Ever since, the gates of his temple were kept open in times of war so that Janus would be ready to protect Rome if necessary. In times of peace the gates were kept closed. Over the ages, Janus has been remembered on many Roman coins, with the distinctive two heads facing in opposite directions.
